Individuality A Rarity
"If value is determined by rarity, then individuality is the most undervalued possession in existence."-Ashmita Arora
In our world, one which is loyal to systems and structures, a world that thrives on molds made to maintain predictable patterns, the rarity of our individuality often goes unnoticed. Society tends to reward sameness, celebrating those who fit within established norms. Those deviating from the given path cast aside. If we understand value well then the unique, irreplaceable essence of our individuality becomes the most precious thing we possess.
The disparaging of individuality begins early. From childhood, we are taught we must adhere to certain rules and model our behavior according to the foundations set forth in our environment. We learn that deviation is risky. Standing out leaves you vulnerable to the judgements and criticism of others. We mask our individuality in favor of blending in, becoming so accustomed to meeting the expectations of others that we lose sight of the extraordinary rarity of who we are. However, regardless of programming individuality is not something that can be erased. It is the core of your very being. Suppressing our individuality, leads only to the diminishment of our own power. Living according to other people’s standards and expectations will only render further disconnection from our true selves. This disconnection can manifest as dissatisfaction, frustration, or a sense of emptiness, as though something vital is missing from our lives.
The challenge, of course, is that society often makes it difficult to fully embrace your individuality. Each person is unique, carrying a distinct combination of experiences. Yet, with pressure to conform, we've often undervalued our uniqueness, trading it for acceptance and approval as defined by external standards. The more you resist these external pressures, the more you will come to see that the only approval you truly need is your own.
Yet, individuality is not static. It will become more nuanced and refined throughout your life. The key is to stay connected to this evolving self. Honor your inner truth as it shifts and to allow your individuality to be a living, breathing expression of who you are. As we do this, we inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect that encourages self-expression. The freedom to be yourself, to express your individuality without compromise, is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and it is a gift that only you can grant.
