Shadow Dance
"Cast a shadow and make it dance. Don’t cast a shadow and live in a trance."-Ashmita Arora
Shadow is something to overcome, something to confront….or so we've been told. The channeled message is a simple sentence, cast a shadow and make it dance, don't cast a shadow and live in the trance. What does this mean at its core? It means that the shadow isn’t some dark lurking entity or a hidden part of us to be feared. Shadow, in its truest form, is nothing more than a collection of circumstances and experiences born out of ego. It is the result of interpreting our experiences through our senses.
The ego is constructed from the things we’ve been taught, what to fear, what to avoid, what to strive for. It’s the narrative hand fed since birth by the outside world. We’re told to do our shadow work, to dig into the recesses of ourselves. But what if shadow work is simply understanding what shadow really is? Let me rearticulate it like this, if you are the light and your physical self is the dense form, then when that light shines on your physical form, it creates a shadow. This shadow isn't inherently good or bad, it just is. In essence I believe living in a trance is simply being unaware of your power over “shadow” and living in passing.
Shadow arises when we act out of habit, fear, or societal conditioning, when we’re not conscious of the why behind our actions. It’s easy to slip into this place because everything can become a shadow when we are not living intentionally. For instance, consider taking a job you despise simply because you're scared you won't be able to pay the bills. You’ve been conditioned to believe that certain types of jobs equate to stability, that they provide the life you’re supposed to have. This narrative is common and constructed by society, the pressure dictates our choices. We chase what we’ve been told is necessary, even if it leaves us empty.
These patterns are not exclusive to jobs, it applies to everything, what we eat, how we live, the ideals we strive for. We operate under the shadows of these constructs, doing what we've learned to do, not necessarily what we truly desire. But when we remember that we are creators, that our true essence is beyond the constructs of the physical world, we begin to see things differently. Shadow isn’t something to conquer, it’s something to understand.
The moment we start living with intention, knowing who we are and why we do what we do, we can begin to play with the shadow rather than be controlled by it. Life becomes a dance, a creation of our own making, not a series of unconscious reactions. It's not about hiding the dark areas of ourselves or giving in to them. It’s about understanding that we are more than the character we’re playing in this life. When we do things with awareness, we engage with life fully. The shadow becomes a tool, a part of the experience rather than the experience itself.
The truth is, each of us has our shadows, and these shadows, while they seem to involve others, are actually reflections of our own internal world. They have everything to do with others and yet, paradoxically, nothing to do with them. It’s an in-depth process of growing, of understanding the layers that make up our responses and behaviors. When you begin to see everything as undefined, not as good or bad, you step into a space where choice becomes clear. You no longer act out of automatic patterns, but instead, you choose whether or not a certain experience is something you wish to pursue, whether it aligns with your intention and truth.
This is where shadow work goes beyond just looking at the hidden parts of ourselves. It's about realizing that our actions and reactions are often tied to these shadows. When you strip away the learned behaviors, the labels of right and wrong, you are left with pure intention. You’re able to navigate life, by what you consciously choose to do. Every interaction, every choice becomes an avenue for experiencing life in a new way. You’re no longer bound by the shadows or led by them. Instead, you see them for what they are, your temporary earthbound dance partners.
